Popularity of microdrones has skyrocketed in the last five years. These drones have been continually improving with smaller and more intricate circuit boards, more powerful motors and batteries, and better implemented software. One of the aspects that still needs more improvement is the video systems for these drones. These devices are tremendously fun to fly, but if the video quality is lacking, these become almost unflyable. If the properties of antennas can be improved for these small aircraft, the durability, performance, and simplicity of design will reach new standards.

Problem Statement

Create a design for a lightweight antenna for microdrones that is lightweight with good performance characteristics.

Microdrones need to be as light as possible. High performance antennas are too heavy for these small drones and in order to make them lighter, durability is sacrificed. This added weight of the system affects performance, flight times, and usability.

Envisioned Solution

Design an antenna with the following properties:

  • Lightweight:  <2g
  • SWR:  <1.5
  • Gain:  >2dbi

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

  • Your submission must be accompanied with a written summary detailing how and why your submission meets as many possible requirements and standards for the challenge
  • Files must be submitted in a single zip-file before required deadlines
  • Submissions must be mindful of any potential intellectual property violations or cite the source for credit
  • Solution providers may submit multiple entries barring that they are all unique
  • Solution providers may form teams to compete in this challenge collectively
  • Teams may submit multiple entries, so long as they are unique
  • Solution providers that are part of a team may NOT submit entries as individuals

Legal agreements must be fully understood before participating in this challenge, if the judges determine that inadequate number of quality submissions have been submitted, they reserve the right to:

  • Modify, extend the dates as deemed fit
  • Modify prize structure
  • Cancel the challenge

At the end of Stage 1, the number of prizes awarded is at the discretion of the judges based on the quality of submissions

  • Overall design explanation
  • Drawings or models
  • Performance characteristics
  • Manufacturing methods


Testing is to be performed by submitter in order to document performance characteristics in submitted report.
